ICT Barriers in South African Education
Schools that have limited resources are continuously underachieved in Mathematics and Science. The government has tried to make technology available in schools, but the problem is that teachers are still using ICT to transmit the subject content rather than using the technologies to enhance learning.
One of the barrier is the teachers who cannot use all the technologies. Many teachers from disadvantaged backgrounds carry out their assigned duties without the requisite content or pedagogic knowledge. These are some of the First-Order Barriers:
- Low technical capabilities.
- Limited access to computer labs created by strict timetables.
- Inadequate technical support.
- School policies.
Some of the barriers of ICT intergration in schools is the infrastructure.buildings are not enough and sometimes they are old,and need to be repaired and maintained. The buildings must be safe and secured. Some schools are situated in rural areas so electricity becomes,if there is no electricity in the area computers cannot be installed.Finance is another barrier because some schools do not have the funds to buy equipment and pay for the installations.
In my schooling years ICT was not used effectively because at school we had computers but there were never used. The reason why there were was that there was no one to taught us CAT as a subject and many teachers do not have sufficient knowledge.
ICT intergration in schools is a big problem that the government still has to address it.
yes girl ict is a big problem and it need to be addresssed soon
ReplyDeleteIndeed. You touch a a number of very important issues here: Physical issues that require attention (buildings, infrastructure) and then the rest: Effective use (training, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, change in attitude, behaviour when using computers in class)
